Application
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to construct props that include the use of mechanical devices, such as cables, levers and fulcrums.
Individuals who apply these skills work autonomously in a team environment as they take responsibility for ensuring that mechanical props meet the creative requirements of productions. They may be responsible for supervising others.
No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.
Elements and Performance Criteria
Elements Elements describe the essential outcomes. | Performance Criteria Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element. |
1. Determine requirements for mechanical props | 1.1 In consultation with relevant colleagues and with reference to prop documentation, confirm requirements for mechanical props 1.2 Discuss budgets and other factors that impact on the type of mechanical props required 1.3 Reach agreement on scope of own work and construction deadlines 1.4 Update construction plans to take account of discussions as required |
2. Prepare for construction work | 2.1 Select the most appropriate construction techniques and mechanical devices based on an analysis of how prop items are to be used 2.2 Select tools, equipment and materials for mechanical props according to construction plans 2.3 Calculate quantities of required materials, avoiding waste where possible |
3. Undertake construction work | 3.1 Follow construction plans to create mechanical props, ensuring that safety procedures are followed at all times 3.2 Check items produced in terms of durability, quality of finish, and suitability for production requirements |
4. Complete construction work | 4.1 Seek feedback on work in progress and adjust techniques as required 4.2 Prepare items in readiness for finishing, according to production requirements 4.3 Contribute to evaluation of prop construction processes and note ways to improve own work performance |
Evidence of Performance
Evidence of the ability to:
construct prop items that incorporate the use of mechanical devices for at least one production or event
follow safety procedures
meet work deadlines
work collaboratively.
Note: If a specific volume or frequency is not stated, then evidence must be provided for each of the above points at least once.
Evidence of Knowledge
To complete the unit requirements the individual must:
describe ways in which the following types of mechanical props can be used in productions and events:
cable-controlled
electrically-controlled
mechanically-controlled
pneumatically-controlled
describe issues and challenges that typically arise when constructing mechanical props and suggest ways to address them
provide examples of the types of mechanical props that are usually constructed and those more likely to be acquired by other means
explain the mechanical principles behind the following devices commonly used to construct mechanical props:
cables
fulcrums
levers
explain how common mechanical devices can be used to create different effects on stage
describe safety issues associated with materials, tools and equipment used to construct mechanical props.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in creative arts industry environments. The assessment environment must include access to:
equipment, tools and materials used to construct mechanical props
a work area where mechanical props can be constructed safely.
Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
Foundation Skills
This section describes language, literacy, numeracy and employment skills incorporated in the performance criteria that are required for competent performance.
Skill | Performance Criteria | Description |
Learning | 4.3 | Seeks the views of others to identify ways to improve own performance |
Reading | 1.1, 2.1, 3.1 | Interprets production documentation in relation to own duties |
Writing | 1.4, 4.3 | Updates workplace documentation |
Oral communication | 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 4.1, 4.3 | Obtains information by listening and questioning Uses clear language to express views |
Numeracy | 1.2, 2.3 | Performs simple calculations when taking measurements and when checking that expenditure on props meets budget allocations |
Navigate the world of work | 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 4.2 | Takes responsibility for decisions about when and how to complete tasks Takes responsibility for meeting health and safety requirements in constructing mechanical props within scope of own role Applies organisational procedures and meets expectations associated with own role Manages time efficiently |
Interact with others | 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 4.1, 4.3 | Works collaboratively with a range of personnel to make mechanical props |
Get the work done | 1.1, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2 | Adopts a methodical and logical approach to the process of constructing mechanical props Plans and organises own workload Makes decisions related to own role and takes responsibility for their outcomes |
